Derby Day in KY

Today is the famous KY Derby here in the Bluegrass State. I don't care for horse racing. Never have. I love horses. Always have. Never cared much for them being raced though. The Derby is a mile and a quarter. Next comes the Preakness, two weeks later, which is a mile and three-sixteenths. Then three weeks later comes the Belmont Stakes and it's a mile and a half. If a horse is versatile enough to win all three they are the Triple Crown winner. That is really BIG. Winning the Derby is big, but the Triple Crown hasn't been won in 30 years or so. Certainly not an easy thing to win. I can understand the breeder's, owner's, and trainer's excitement at having a horse win. That must be a phenomonial feeling!

For the females going to the Derby they need to have a special hat. I think this is the hat I'd like if I were going. It has all those beautiful flowers and I always wanted a hat with that netting on it. (Wonder if they call it netting?) Seems very classy! Pretty color too. I think this one is priced at over $3,000. Well, maybe I wouldn't be wearing this hat after all!

It would be fun going to the Derby just to see the ladies in all their splendid (or not so splendid) dresses and hats!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!

Hi Rachel, Thanks for your comments regarding my niece. I love watching the derby and seeing all the outfits and the parties. We have been watching all day. I wish the weather had been better here for it though. Love the signs.

I know the Derby is on right now, but I'm not watching it. Never been my thing, and I don't like gambling at all. I'll leave that for those who like it.

That last sign is a good one for sure!

Have a great weekend, Rachel. :o)

Love and hugs,

Diane

I'm surprised to admit, but I actually like that hat! Don't know that I'd ever have anything to wear it too, but it's charming. Three times this morning I overheard people talking about horseracing, without hearing the exact details and it wasn't till later when I asked someone about it they told me it was Kentucky Derby day. As you can see, I'm not much of a horse racing fan. But like you, I like horses. Have a wonderful week Rachel!

That is a very pretty hat! I'm not into horse racing either, but if I lived there I would probably have to go once!

I love the church signs!

Loved your Sunday signs.

I liked the Sunday signs and the hat until I found out it cost $3,000. No hat should cost cost that amount of money.

So that's what a $3,000 hat looks like? I don't think I'll be sporting anything like it anytime soon. The derby will have to wait. ;)

Great signs, btw! Happy Sunday!!

I LOVE that hat! $3000??? Good Lord, that seems like a lot of money for one hat...lol..It iis mighty pretty though, isn't it?

I heard that a 50 to 1 Horse WON the Derby today....I sure wish I had bet some money on him...But, in truth, I didn't even remember it was Derby Day!

Great Sunday Signs, Rachel....Have a Blessed Sunday, my dear.

Hi Rachel, I like your church sign.
Mrs. Jim likes the horse races, mostly just to watch the ladies in their hats and dress. She does like to watch the major races and even has favorite horses.
I have never been to a horse race and if I went it would be to watch the horses.
We should be back May 7th, this has been a nice holiday. Our son, Tim, is with us this time. We have taken both his daughters (our grandkids) with us before and he has often said the 'next' would be his turn. Well, this was the next, we tried calling his bluff, and he came.
..
Thanks for reading my poem. I am liking this blogging exercise and really enjoy comments. Note: people just don't tell me they are bad but I know that some are. :-)

I didn't think I'd enjoy watching horse racing but when Steve brought me a few years ago for the first time, I loved it:-) I think it's the fact that the horses are so well taken care of and really seem to love racing. That hat is gorgeous...and so is the price! lol It would indeed be fun to "people watch" and see what everyone is wearing:-) Love the signs!!! Take care of YOU dear Rachel:-) xoxo

I, too, love horses - used to own a couple... and I love watching the Derby, but you would never find me at a race track - nor would you catch me betting on a race - but at 50-1... somebody made a haul! I must say, it was amazing to watch from the blimp... unreal.
I am afraid if I had that hat, it would have to be on display somewhere besides my head - $3,000? I'd buy a display cabinet for it! LOL!

I'm with you on the horse racing, Rachel. I'm not a big fan of whipping horses to run faster.

As usual, the signs are great!

I love the signs especially the last one.
I have never known much about the Derby. I really haven't had a special feeling for horses either since being chased by two huge work horses when I was a kid.
I do love hats however and I think it would be so much fun to design them. Can you just imagine?

Both church signs are so true....

We watched the derby and was pleasantly surprised by the finish...It was fun to watch that horse pull up from the back and weave it's way to the front and then just run away with it. I hear that they are not going for the other two races.... I don't know how true that is. TF's grandfather was big into racing, owning a race house of his own..

Have a great week, Rachel.

I'm hearing God's laugher a LOT lately. Those birds are singing like crazy, and it's wonderful.

It would be fun to dress up all fancy and go to one of the big horse races. What a thrill to see a horse win the Triple Crown. Maybe this year?? Who knows?
I wonder if the horses like to race? I hope they do.
They probably don't like being pushed so hard and hit to go faster though, even if they love to run.
I'm always intrigued by those little jockeys.
They are about the size of one of my thighs.

I knew a woman who trained horses for a living. She was opposed to horse racing because the horses are raced at too young an age. A horse at only 2 or 3 is at risk in racing.

It is exciting though. The winner this year had a Canadian connection. It had been prepared by a trainer in Canada.

That last Sunday sign is the absolute truth!

My Bucket List includes attending the Derby in person. My dad and Granddad trained race horses.

And that hat would look wonderful on you!

I'd go broke buying the hat, but at least I'd look good living on the street!
