Sparing the Rod

I was recently talking to a friend of mine. She had been keeping her two grand-daughters for a couple of weeks. She was telling me how she showed one of them the fly swat that hung inside one of the kitchen cabinet doors and told her if she misbehaved she'd get spanked with that. She said her grand-daughter looked at her and said, "Nana, that's for bugs!"

I was thinking about when I was a kid and when we misbehaved you would get the switch taken to your naked legs. My parents believed in "sparing the rod and spoiling the child." Their motto was that they couldn't stop you from doing something but they'd sure make you sorry you ever did it in the first place! Mom would say, "I'll take a good 'keen' switch to you!" A 'good keen' switch meant one that the leaves were all off of and it was clean as a whistle and did it ever smart when it made contact with your bare legs! Talk about doing some dancing around and wailing at the top of your lungs!

My Dad never gave me a spanking but I think he did the boys some. I never saw it but my Mom told me he used to get mad at them for something and if the boys would run off and get away from him then he'd get over his mad and not whip them when they came back. My Dad could just look at me and say, "Little girl I better not have to tell you again." That's all it took!! He put the fear in me and I didn't have to be told twice when he spoke.

Sunday Sign Twofers

I hate to admit it, but it took me a little while to get the meaning of this first sign! Then the light went off! Duh!! Yeah, I'm slow sometimes!

Who Knew?

Ants have been bad this year, at least in our neck of the woods. I got some stuff at Lowe's called "Amdro" Ant Block.

I was quite surprised when I read the label and it says that it controls acrobat ants, Argentine ants, carpenter ants, cornfield ants, crazy ants, field ants, fire ants, ghost ants, harvester ants, odorous house ants, pavement ants, Pharoah ants, thief ants, and the Texas leafcutting ant. I never heard of all those different kinds of ants before. I wonder what sets those 'crazy ants' apart from the others?? And 'thief ants'?? Who knew there was so many kinds of ants? Certainly not I!

Speeding Along

I was over visiting my neighbors today. We sat around on the back deck and another neighbor walked over. One of them shared the fact that she recently got a speeding ticket on I-75, doing 80 mph when the speed limit is 70 mph. The ticket cost her $183.00. That is a major OUCH! She said it was a motorcycle cop. I didn't even know we had those. Usually if I go up that way on I-75 (which isn't near as often as I'd like BTW), I usually go with the flow and I do speed sometimes. I have never seen a motorcycle cop before, or at least if I saw one I didn't know that's what they were. I think from now on I'll stay more in the law abiding range. With ticket prices like that with only 10 miles over the limit it sure will make this old gal slow down! I didn't ask her if she would get points taken off or not. I know that happens sometimes but I'm not sure of the rules.

The last ticket I got was back in the 70's. One morning as I was coming home (I worked 3rd shift but it was still dark), I got pulled over. Back then the speed limit there was 60 mph. I knew the cop always sat there watching and I was doing 64 mph when I passed him. I figured at 4 mph over the limit he wouldn't stop me. He did. I told him the speed limit was 60 mph and I was doing 64 mph, so why was he stopping me for only 4 mph over the limit? He said I was doing 14 mph over the limit. Huh?? He said the speed limit was 50 mph at night. Well, he gave me the ticket and I drove back to see. Sure enough it was 50! It was one of those signs where it changed after dark from 60 mph to 50 mph! I hadn't noticed it before but I never forgot it afterwards. I don't recall what the fine was.

I have been very fortunate to not get a ticket since then. I am usually pretty cautious here around town and most places I go. But going on the interstate where it seems most everyone is speeding...well I do go with the flow sometimes. I guess next time I go I'll get in the right lane and stick to the speed limit. Because as my church sign below says.....well.....you get the picture!

Solid Gold

Yesterday evening I was trying to find something to watch on TV but it seemed so many channels were recapping Michael Jackson's Memorial. I really hated that MJ died so young. I remember him more from when he was a kid singing with the Jackson Five. He was a very talented person but obviously had some problems in his life. It seems sometimes that people like that who are so talented often have problems in their personal lives. From what I saw of the memorial I think MJ would have been proud and honored by the outpouring of love and the memorial for him.

I was amazed to hear that he lived in a mansion in LA and was paying $100,000 a month for rent. The fact that he lived there doesn't amaze me but that rent price sure does! I can't imagine a house/mansion where the rent is that high. It must be grand indeed! Many people have bought homes cheaper than that!! I wonder if all the bills were included with that rent price? I certainly hope so! I guess when you are used to having the money that he does/did then that price isn't shocking like it is to me!

I did love to watch MJ dance. I'm always fascinated by people who can dance like robots and do all those other moves that dancers do. Michael could do the moves and it looked easy for him. Then watching the moonwalk where his legs just moved with such fluid movements.

Does anyone remember a TV show that was on back in the 80's called "Solid Gold?" I always watched that show and thought how wonderful it would be to be one of the Solid Gold dancers. When someone was singing there were the dancers in the background dancing. Sometimes it might just be a couple or it might be a whole group. I loved to watch them as they moved along with the music. I thought how wonderful it would be to be one of the Solid Gold Dancers!!

Remembering and Happy 4th to All!!!!!

Hello fellow bloggers! This time last year I was in Nebraska at
Cliff's getting ready for Blogstock08. It was so much fun and great to meet so many bloggers. It was definitely the highlight of the year for me! Now I have those good memories.

I learned this week that a friend of mine, who is such a dear sweet lady, has pancreatic cancer. She is in her 60's but looked much younger. She always ate healthy foods and exercised, and she embraced life to the fullest. She was always so cheerful and a delight to be around. She just found out in May and has been getting the chemo treatments, but now is in a nursing home getting something to hopefully build up her strength so she can come home again. I hope and pray that she does get to come home and have some quality of life for as long as possible. I know with that kind of cancer the prognosis is not a good one at all. My heart just goes out to her.
I hope everyone has a wonderful and happy 4th!! Do you recall learning this in school? I do!!
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
